The League works to influence public policy on specific issues after member study and consensus. The following three program pillars serve as the focus for LWVIL advocacy. Our issue specialists actively monitor the listed issues for action opportunities.

Find a detailed outline of our stances on these issues in Where We Stand, the guide to LWVIL public policy positions, also available as a convenient abridged version. In concert with Impact on Issues, the guide to LWVUS public policy positions, it forms the basis for all action taken by Illinois Leagues on national and state issues.

Voting Rights and Election Processes

The League works to ensure free, fair and accessible elections, promote equitable voter access, protect voting by mail, voter registration, election security, and to standardize best practices and processes across election authorities.

We support initiatives which conform to our positions regarding campaign finance and ethics reform, redistricting, and abolishing the electoral college.

Climate Crisis and Environmental Protection

The League believes that climate change is a serious threat facing our nation and our planet. We advocate for policies to mitigate climate change and adapt to its impacts, including promoting renewable energy sources, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and reducing waste.

We work for environmental justice and policies that ensure an equitable distribution of environmental risks and benefits across all communities. In addition, we support the protection of the air, land, and water to promote healthy ecosystems, biodiversity and a clean and healthful environment.

Equitably Meeting Basic Human Needs

The League advocates for policies that equitably meet basic human needs for all residents, including health care, reproductive health and behavioral health, economic support, housing, education, safety, freedom from violence, and justice.

To support these initiatives, the we advocate for a state revenue system that is equitable, progressive, stable, responsive, and simple.
