Karen Douglas

Speaker, LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF ILLINOIS, ISSUES BRIEFING 2022


Karen Douglas served as 3rd VP/Program for the League of Women Voters of Central NM (LWVCNM) 2015-17 and member of the CNM Leadership Team.  She has now served as LWVNM Director and Chair of the LWVNM Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Safety Committee since May 2017 with SNF Storage Safety Advocacy Statement approved by LWVUS December 2019 and recent 2021 Consensus meetings involving members of the four NM local leagues resulting in the SNF Storage Safety Position adopted by the LWVNM Convention delegates April 2021.  She has been serving as LWVCNM Co-President since May 2019 and now serves with Co-President Donna Sandoval.  Karen has been involved with LWVCNM activities including her service as APD Forward representative since 2015, Observer for Valley Community Policing Council since 2016, LWVCNM Office volunteer since 2017, and 2019-20 suffrage planning activities including the LWV 100th Birthday Party February 2020.

Karen is a Nuclear Engineer, Nuclear Safety Specialist, and ASME NQA-1 Lead Nuclear Quality Assurance Auditor who retired from full-time work with US DOE/NNSA April 2019 and now consults part-time with Longenecker & Associates. During 2019 Karen was recognized with both the US DOE/NNSA Distinguished Career Service Award and UNM Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award. Karen also served as 2020-21 Chair of ASQ Energy & Environment Division with >6000 international members and both Editor and Co-Author of the Nuclear Auditing Handbook: A Guide for Quality Systems Practitioners, published by ASQ Quality Press September 2021. Karen chaired the 1st joint virtual international EED/Design & Construction Division Conference November 2021 “Quality Methods for Sustainability and Resilience” and was among the conference presenters and moderators. Karen had previously been employed by General Electric Nuclear Energy Division, Raychem Corporation, and Motorola Corporation. Karen earned her undergraduate engineering degree from UNM in 1979 and completed her MS in Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University in 1983.
