CHICAGO, IL, March 11, 2025 — The League of Women Voters of Illinois (LWVIL) spent the weekend taking part in high visibility protests for democracy.

Beginning Saturday, March 8, Kathy Cortez, LWVIL Vice President for Issues and Advocacy, spoke at the International Women’s Day March in Chicago.

Addressing the crowd, Cortez said, “The International Women’s Day March is an opportunity for us to celebrate achievements that were made over the last many years by women to further social and economic justice, but the last decade has seen an erosion of our gains and an affront to our rights as women and people.”

On Sunday, March 9, Becky Simon, President of LWVIL, joined state and national League of Women Voters chapters from around the country at the 60th Anniversary Selma Crossing Jubilee to honor and commemorate Bloody Sunday by marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama.

Commenting on the continued need for protest, President Becky Simon said, “This is about preservation of the spirit of the struggle for the right to vote in this country and the world. Our goal is to inspire people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds to respect and appreciate the power of their vote.”
