FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHICAGO, IL, October 31, 2024 — Your ballot is safe! Illinois state ballot handling procedures protect against intentional or unintentional ballot destruction and related tampering, whether you vote by mail or in person.

Illinois conducts pre- and post-election testing of voting equipment, as well as ballot counting processes open for public observation. Post-election audits, including ‘risk-limiting-audits,' ensure that the vote count was done correctly and that we can trust results.

“Election officials implement ballot processing and tabulation safeguards designed to ensure each ballot cast in the election can be correctly counted,” explained Becky Simon, President of the League of Women Voters of Illinois. “These safeguards include chain of custody procedures, auditable logging requirements, and canvass processes. Illinois safeguards mail ballots by verifying signatures, tracking barcodes, and setting clear chains of custody for all ballots.”

Beware of false claims about the election results. We expect bad actors to spread disinformation to cast doubt for their own political gain. You can report election disinformation you see online at reportdisinfo.org.

Once they are cast, our votes must be respected, no matter the results.

Every election, League of Women Voters chapters across the country provide voters with the critical information they need to make an informed vote. By sponsoring candidate forums and voter guides like IllinoisVoterGuide.org, we prepare voters to make their voices heard.
