League Statement on Illinois State Court Ruling

3/1/24

The League of Women Voters of the US and the League of Women Voters of Illinois issued the following statement in response to the Illinois state judge ruling that former President Trump is disqualified from holding the office of President under the US Constitution, and therefore cannot be listed as a candidate on the 2024 presidential primary ballot:

“This week, an Illinois state judge determined former President Donald Trump ineligible from holding the office of President and disqualified from appearing on the state's presidential primary ballot for actions related to an insurrection. This makes Illinois the third state challenging former President Trump’s eligibility to appear on a state’s primary ballot, which means voters across the country need clarity as they head to the polls this primary season.

“The League of Women Voters recognizes that former President Trump’s eligibility for the White House under the US Constitution is likely to be resolved by the US Supreme Court, and once the Court has ruled, the League will provide clarity for voters about how the decision may impact the presidential primary election season.

“For over a century, the League of Women Voters has worked to empower voters and to ensure everyone is fully represented in our democracy. The Supreme Court’s decision will decide this matter once and for all so that voters have the clarity they need to vote with confidence.”
