Making Democracy Work for All–DC Statehood, 7:00–8:00 pm
Taxation without representation is alive and well in our nation's capital, where more than 700,000 residents contribute more than $27 billion a year in federal taxes—more than many states. Yet residents of DC have no voting representation in Congress. Hear from LWV of the District of Columbia members:

Why is it crucial that DC become our 51st state?
What is the path to statehood?
What is the status of current efforts?
How can you make a difference?

Anne Stauffer is Vice President for Issues and Advocacy with the LWV DC. Anne worked in federal and state budget policy at the Pew Charitable Trusts, New Mexico Voices for Children, the New Mexico State Budget Office, and the federal Office of Management and Budget.  She holds a BA in international relations from Brown University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina.

Yilin Zhang is a DC Statehood advocate, political strategist, and healthcare consultant. She is a former candidate and campaign manager. She holds degrees from the London School of Economics and Political Science and University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and was a Fulbright Fellow.

Esther Mackintosh is President Emerita of the Federation of State Humanities Councils, having retired in 2020. She has worked as an editor and writer throughout her career, including two years in Saudi Arabia. She holds a PhD in American literature and is currently serving a three-year term as chair of the board of her undergraduate alma mater in Iowa.
